Synopsis: In 1940, Kawamoto Akiko (Yoshino Kyoko) lives with her parents Genkichi (Tanaka Tetsushi) and Shizuko (Matobu Sei) and two younger brothers in the town of Mitaki in Hiroshima Prefecture. She finds joy in performing on her favourite piano. One day, Akiko’s teacher Takeuchi Shigeru (Machida Keita), who has been supportive of her dream, receives a draft notice. As the war situation deteriorates, Akiko’s life is increasingly detached from music. Despite her wish to study and play more of the piano, Akiko is one of many students across the country who have been mobilised by the national government to help with the war efforts. On the morning of 6 August 1945, 19-year-old Akiko heads to the centre of town to work, overriding her father’s objections. That day, an atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima. Akiko dies the next day as a result of acute radiation sickness. Although her piano was damaged in the blast, it miraculously survives and is eventually restored years later. Since then, it has been played in public to convey the desire for peace and to remind the world of that tragic event. The piano made its world premiere on the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki this August.
